The Manhattan Cocktail originated in the late 1800s in New York City, at the Manhattan Club.  It's been famous ever since.

Serves one.
Ingredients
2 fluid ounces rye whiskey
½ fluid ounce sweet vermouth
1 dash Angostura bitters
ice cubes
cherry for garnish
Steps
  1. In a cocktail shaker or jar, stir together:  rye whiskey, vermouth, bitters, and a handful of ice.
  2. Stir until well until combined and chilly.
  3. Strain into a cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a cherry.
