Corinne's Tart Salad

Present at all Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners!  I think only Mama, Michael Young, and I like it.  However, if it was absent, someone never failed to ask, "Where's that salad with those little marshmallows?

Ingredients
1 package small marshmallows
1 large can Mandarin oranges, halved and drained (You can use fresh cut-up tangerines or satsumas.)
1 can flaked coconut (Mama used Angel Flake.)
1 large can crushed pineapple in juice, drained
1 & 1/2 small cartons of sour cream
Maraschino cherries, halved and drained (optional)
Steps
  1. Mix drained fruit (including about 10 or 12 cherries); add coconut and sour cream.
  2. Add marshmallows until salad is the right consistency, but not too thick - it will thicken somewhat as it cools.
  3. Chill overnight, if possible.
