Celebrate Mardi Gras season with New Orleans and Gulf Coast favorite recipes.
Growing up an hour and a half from from New Orleans made me appreciate all things seafood, great restaurants, and cherished recipes. Aunt Anniebelle and Uncle Jimmy lived on Canal Street for most of my childhood and visits to them were a real treat.
When I was little, there was still a train that took us from our hometown to New Orleans. What memories - the cable cars, the zoo, the French Quarter, the Blue Room, Mardi Gras, red beans and rice, Schwegmann's grocery, beignets, and of course - gumbo!
Later on, my university was just over an hour from New Orleans, so weekend trips to the Warehouse for concerts were a must. Oh, the rock legends I saw there! I even fell in love on one New Orleans weekend. My brother and sis-in-law moved there while I was in college, making New Orleans a second home.
Here are some of my very favorite New Orleans/Gulf Coast recipes. Some have been passed down to me by family through the decades, some I sweet-talked chefs and friends for, and all are delicious.

BONUS - I've written a short story about an adventure I had many years ago, while making the recipe for Mama's Chocolate Meringue Pie.
It's both heartwarming and funny - please enjoy and don't be afraid to make the pie! |
