This German recipe is like a cross between a cake and a cobbler - very moist.  I originally got it from my non-German mother!  It's a wonderful way to use fresh plums when they're in season.

Ingredients for Küchen
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp baking powder
1 stick unsalted butter, melted
pinch salt
10 fresh plums - peel on, pitted and halved
Ingredients for Topping
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp lemon zest (grated lemon rind)
Steps for Küchen
  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  2. By hand, stir in the eggs, salt, baking powder, and flour.
  3. Pour batter into a 9-inch springform pan.
  4. Place plums on top of the batter, with the skin-side facing up.
Steps for Topping
  1. Mix sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle on top of the cake
  2. Dribble the lemon juice over the sugar/cinnamon mixture.
Steps for Baking
  1. Bake küchen for one hour at 350° F.  Cool it a bit before removing from springform pan.
