Back in 1874, the Tom Collins cocktail appeared. There are two legends to explain its origin...
The first involves Jerry Thomas, a bartender in St. Louis, with famous customers, including Charles Dickens. (What the dickens was he doing in St. Louis?) Although there's no proof, it's claimed that Jerry invented the Tom Collins . He does have a claim to fame; he wrote the first recipe book for cocktails in the U.S.
The second legend involves a viral practical joke popular in larger cities of the U.S. No social media, folks, the joke spread through newspapers!! Here it is: A man asks his friend, "Have you seen that miserable man, Tom Collins?" His friend responds with, "Who's that?" The man says, "I don't know him, but he's spreading horrible rumors about you." The two friends go to a nearby bar where Tom Collins is said to hang out. The friend asks the bartender, "Where's Tom Collins?" The bartender (aware of the joke) points to a random man in the bar and eventually, all the patrons start laughing at the practical joke that's happened. And so, the Tom Collins cocktail was invented along the way. Sounds kind silly, but think of how people will view current day social media 150 years from now.
